How we talk about what works — and why you can trust it.
We curate the science, attribute every claim to its source, and answer to owners instead of brands. This is the standard we hold ourselves to.
Most pet-health content is written by someone with something to sell. We built Tail & Tonic to be the opposite: an independent read on the science and the products, answerable to owners instead of brands.
When a topic has products worth naming, we name a short list — one, two, or three, only as many as the evidence honestly supports. When a topic has no product worth recommending, we say so and recommend nothing. A resource that sometimes sells you nothing is more believable than one that always has something to sell.
How we talk about what works
We are careful never to be the party asserting that a specific product works. Every claim is split into two layers, each independently true — so the science we stand behind and the promises a brand makes never get blurred together.
The science layer
"Research suggests omega-3s support skin and coat health." Cited, factual, tied to no purchase — the part we put our name on.
The efficacy layer
"These products claim to help with that." We state the true fact that they claim it. We never assert the product itself works.
Best among the claimants
Of the products that make the claim, which are worth your money. That judgment — our curation — is the whole value we add.
The language stays in supportable territory at all times: "formulated with X, which studies associate with Y," and "claims to help" — never "this fixes your dog's joints."
Why we're independent
We take no money from manufacturers. No affiliate commissions. No sponsorships. No pay-for-placement. It's the one thing the thousand pet-affiliate blogs cannot say — and when we point you toward what the evidence supports, you know exactly whose side we're on: yours, and your pet's.
- No sponsors — no brand pays to appear or to be ranked.
- No commissions — we earn nothing on what you buy, wherever you buy it.
- No paid placements — the list is the list, on the merits.
- Every claim sourced — science attributed, efficacy left to the manufacturer.
- Reader-supported — we answer to owners, not advertisers.
Who we are
We are a team of pet owners — dog people, cat people, and proudly opinionated about both.
Between us we bring backgrounds in health and nutrition, product research, and years of hard-earned experience navigating an industry that has not always prioritized the animals it claims to serve. There's no single founder story here and no single face on the brand. What we have is something we think matters more: a shared conviction, a common standard, and a willingness to walk away from any product that doesn't meet it.
When we couldn't find a resource we trusted completely, we decided to build one.
That conviction is simple. The pets in our lives deserve the same rigor we'd apply to our own health decisions. Informed. Intentional. Uncompromising. And honest enough to tell you when the answer is "save your money."
We're adding a licensed-veterinarian review layer
Because this is health information for the animals you love, we intend to add a veterinary review layer — a licensed vet checking physical-health articles for medical accuracy — while keeping our editorial independence: the advisor would review for accuracy, not to favor any brand. This layer is not yet in place, and we don't claim any article is vet-reviewed until it genuinely is.
◐ Not yet active — we'll mark reviewed articles only once a licensed advisor is in placeOur standard of proof
Everything we publish is factual and as honest as we can humanly make it. If anyone challenges us, we can defend our work — gathering and supplying information for the consumer — logically and in good faith, because we've done everything we can to make it accurate: sourced science, attributed claims, and silence where there's nothing honest to say. That's the standard. We'd rather publish less than publish something we couldn't stand behind.
The good stuff, sent straight to you.
